Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in order to inform a decision on an application for planning permission following the discovery of suspected human bones in two test holes excavated during a geotechnical investigation of the site. The further excavation of these and two other test holes revealed structural remains and deposits of modern, mainly 18th to 20th century origin. The constrained working environment, however, meant that the excavations did not penetrate beneath the modern overburden to explore possible underlying medieval remains which were considered likely to be present in this part of the town. Noting the potential for surviving medieval remains beneath the modern overburden and given that the recent excavations did not penetrate to the depth likely to be disturbed by development works, it was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out to observe excavations carried out in the process of development and to record any discoveries of archaeological interest.
