Abstract: |
The site of a residential development on the Bengeworth side of the River Avon adjacent to the Workman Bridge has produced evidence of substantial dumping of alluvial-derived materials, principally of the 13th to 15th centuries. Significant quantities of ceramic debris were recovered during evaluation prior to development. The site is documented as the probable location of Bengeworth Castle. Little structural evidence was recovered, but a substantial stone built wall and a number of large ditches may represent former boundaries. The presence of disarticulated human remains appears to confirm the existence of a cemetery on the site, founded immediately after the destruction of the castle in the late 12th century. The ceramic assemblage provides a useful comparison with other assemblages recently excavated in Evesham.[AIP] |
