Abstract: |
The most significant results of the watching brief was the identification of a group of undated inhumations c.6m to the south of the church. It was possible that further inhumations survived beneath the new drains. Iron nails of possible later medieval to early post-medieval date were observed in the fill of one of the graves. Some of the graves appeared to be aligned parallel to the axis of the church. However, this evidence must be treated with caution, given the narrow width of the drain trenches in which the observations were made. The balance of probability was that the observed burials lay within the late medieval/early post-medieval parish cemetery. However, in light of the tentative evidence for their alignment on the Church of Our Lady, it was also possible that they post-dated the construction of the 18th century church. Gravestones on the northern side of the building indicated that burials in the vicinity of the church continued into the early 20th century. [Au(adp)] |
