Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken at the site. Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pits and wells were investigated, the latter containing wooden axe hafts, ladders and timber wattles. Post holes, a possible roundhouse, a four post structure and ditches from a field system were also dated to this period. Narrow Roman enclosures containing divisions and a quarry pit in one enclosure were encountered. Saxo-Norman remains were identified in the southern half of the site, consisting of quarry pits, and successive phases of boundary ditches. A Saxo-Norman well was also identified containing three animal skulls and wattle revetments. After the well was abandoned wood objects including a wheel felloe, a card-side rail top and an animal yoke were discarded in it. [Au(adp)] |
