Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological field survey and trial trenching was undertaken to determine the predicted impact of the proposed landfill extension on areas of archaeological potential. Field survey concentrated on the study of peat deposits, fieldwalking and gradiometer surveys whilst the trial trenching comprised the hand excavation of test pits and trenches at the southern end of the lateral landfill extension, where archaeological sites of Mesolithic date (identified by scatters of struck flint) might be buried beneath peat deposits. Two smaller and localised concentrations of flint, also probably areas of Early Mesolithic date were recorded in test pits. The gradiometer survey indicated the presence of enclosures and produced tentative evidence for a possible cemetery of Iron Age date on the western boundary of the development area. A detailed mitigation strategy was set out. [Au(abr)] |
