Abstract: |
Page Road ran roughly north-west to south-east through the centre of the site. The site was not within an Area of Archaeological Priority as defined by Hounslow Borough Council, however, the site was partially located to the south in a Conservation Area. The existing buildings were not Listed and there were no SAMs within the boundaries of the site. The proposed scheme of development comprised rows of houses of three-storey or lower, 23 blocks of four-storey flats and six community amenity zones with open spaces. The site consisted of a main block of houses and Zones 1-4 and 6, and a separate smaller area to the north which would be Zone 5. Page Road would no longer be in existence, except for the northern portion outside of the site boundary, which would be utilised as an access route. Geotechnical investigations had been undertaken in the form of boreholes. A number of these revealed that a general depth of modern overburden in the form of topsoil and modern debris, overlay a variable thickness of mixed clay with gravel that was a probable earlier agricultural horizon. This occurred in Boreholes A, B, D-G and Boreholes 2, 4, 6 and 7. In the north-eastern corner there appeared to be a natural outcrop of London Clay. The rest of the site was covered in river terrace gravel with the exception of a band to the southern end of the site where it was thought that natural 'turnover' of the gravel had occurred by post-glacial fluvial action. The gravels could be found at a depth of between 0.25 and 3.6m below ground level. There were no references in the GLSMR from within the site boundary although there were numerous entries for the surrounding area. Cartographic sources and reports of archaeological investigations in the vicinity suggested that there was a moderate potential for archaeology existing upon the site, specifically in areas which had previously remained undeveloped. The area was well known for prehistoric activity and the site was adjacent to a Roman road. The geotechnical information revealed that gravel existed below the topsoil in a number of areas on the site which to this day had remained undeveloped. This had the potential to hold archaeological remains, particularly features dating to the prehistoric period. [Au(abr)] |
