Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it had limited potential for the discovery of significant prehistoric remains, but that previous archaeological investigations in the immediate vicinity had revealed substantial remains dating from the Roman period, and to a lesser extent the medieval and early post-medieval periods. Potential Roman remains at the site were likely to include traces of roads, drains, clay and timber buildings, and parts of a revetted channel associated with a tributary of the Walbrook. Medieval and earlier post-medieval remains could include cellars, wall foundations, wells, drains and rubbish pits associated with the 15th century and later Carpenters' Hall, which had been demolished in 1876 to make way for the present buildings. Construction of these buildings had reduced the archaeological potential of the site to some extent. However, the basements appeared to be too shallow to have removed all of the potential archaeological stratigraphy, particularly the earlier Roman remains. It was recommended that a series of engineering and archaeological test-pits should be excavated. [Au(abr)]
