Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during urgent repairs to the farmhouse, which incorporated the remains of a timber framed building thought to have dated from the late 17th century. The surviving section of the timber frame was showing significant signs of structural weakness and decay. Unfortunately, the brick infill had already been removed when the first site visit was made and the timber frame had also been partially dismantled. Nevertheless, by recording the main frame timbers still in-situ, and by recording the ex-situ timbers laid out on the ground, it was possible to recreate the original form of the timber frame. It was also possible to record important items of detail, notably a series of stave holes and grooves for the original wattle in-fill between the panels. Several original carpenter's marks were also recorded. It also proved possible to partially recreate the lower part of the timber frame, based on the presence of redundant mortises and peg holes in the underside of the mid rail. Several off-cuts from the repairs to the main frame posts were also retained for dendrochronological dating. [Au(abr)]
