Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken which concentrated upon the site and its vicinity in advance of redevelopment of the site. The report concluded that, from the available evidence, the assessment site was crossed by the Roman Stane Street and fell within the Bishop's Stortford Roman settlement. Traces of Roman features and structures had been shown to be present at the west end of the site. It was felt possible that evidence of medieval and post-medieval occupation relating to Collins Cross would have survived in the eastern part of the site. It was apparent from the available cartographic evidence that much of the site had been covered with buildings at some time or another since the 19th century and that these would have truncated or damaged any surviving archaeological features to a varying extent across the site.
