Abstract:
Detailed fluxgate gradiometer surveys were carried out in five blocks comprising a 20% sample of an area at Copt Hill where it was proposed to develop meadow and woodland as part of the Great North Forest. The study aimed to identify features of archaeological interest and thus contribute to a programme of research and evaluation prior to the site's regeneration. The survey results provided good evidence for a number of ditches in each of the areas investigated. Of particular interest was a dense concentration of features south of the Seven Sisters Barrow which may have included a ring ditch and pit alignment. These features were almost certainly components of a more extensive prehistoric landscape of which the barrow formed a focal part. The geophysical survey showed that a buried pipe, waggonway or other linear iron structure traversed the development area in a north east direction from a point at the south west corner of the proposed kickabout site. An extensive deposit of burnt material (such as ash) had been mapped near the summit of the slope west of the Seven Sisters Barrow. This deposit may have accounted for one of two low mounds which existed west and south west of the barrow. [Au(adp)]
