Abstract: |
The evaluation demonstrated the substantial accumulation of soils in the lower areas to the south and west of the site. The ceramic evidence from the deeper deposits suggested that they were soils of medieval origin. These soils sealed two linear features, which, on the basis of the finds evidence, were likely to have been medieval in origin, and which probably fulfilled a drainage function. The plentiful 16th-17th century pottery recovered from layers sealing the medieval soils suggested that heavy cultivation adding to the build up of colluvial deposits was likely to have continued into the early modern period. Other features seen were post-medieval in origin and of limited extent. [Au(adp)] |
