Abstract:
Boreholes and two trenches were excavated as Phase 2 of the study of the Merchant Adventurers' Hall. A wealth of archaeological and structural information was produced which exceeded all expectations. As a result, the already considerable archaeological importance of the site was enhanced. Information on the regime of the River Foss, a well preserved Norman hall beneath the Merchant's Hall, and the structure of the Merchant's Hall itself was gathered. One aspect of the archaeological sequence highlighted a discrepancy between the accepted pottery dates and the assumed history of the Merchant's Hall (thought to have been built in the 14th century). The pottery found in the dumps which were thought to be associated with the construction of the Merchant's Hall included examples of Humber wares and Hambleton-type wares, currently thought to date to the 15th century. The implication is that either the pottery actually dates from the middle 14th century (or earlier), or that the present Merchant Adventurers' Hall was constructed in the 15th century. [Au(adp)]
