Abstract: |
During the watching brief a layer of medieval made ground was uncovered, cut to the east by the foundation trench for the Ducal Palace and to the west by the existing carriageway. The bank extended round the west side of the palace, and this result confirmed it's importance as it contained the highest levels of surviving medieval stratigraphy in the upper bailey. Two phases of medieval curtain wall (Area 02). A stretch of masonry was revealed, which was aligned on a further stretch located during mains trenching in 1998. Together they could be equated with an early phase of the castle pre-dating the late medieval layout shown on the Smythson plan of 1617. A stretch of robber trench was found with similar alignment tot he east wall of the west range in the upper bailey of the caste, as shown on the Smythson plan of 1617. Medieval wall and features (Area 03). Four very large post holes and two connecting wall trenches were recorded. These appeared to belong to one or more very substantial timber structures pre-dating the robbed wall. A large number of other features of probable medieval date were recorded, and limited excavation was carried out on some. Ducal Palace (Area 03). A mid-18th century brick structure was located, consisting of an enclosed rectangle straddling a substantial brick-built wall running from the site boundary wall to the north-west corner of the south range of the Ducal palace. Partial excavation showed that it was a twin stairwell (or less probably a roofed lodge) leading from the terrace beneath the site boundary wall to the cliff edge, and perhaps down to the Park. It was dated to 1744-1769 from map evidence, and unexpectedly indicated development of the park land and castle grounds in this poorly documented period in the site's history. [Au(abr)] |
