Abstract: |
A monitoring exercise with regard to the construction of a new wildlife reserve found evidence for past activity at the site. Two features, a possible red hill and a pit, may both have been associated with salt extraction activities located on the marsh edge. No dating evidence was forthcoming but it was likely that they were of Roman origin. Medieval layers and water channels were identified indicating localised activity, including arable farming and possible nearby occupation. An extensive carbonised grain deposit was recorded, and may have suggested a large combustive event. Water channels may have indicated the transport of grain by water. Other water channels were undated or of modern origin. [Au(adp)] |
