Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment of a proposed development site beside the River Thames was undertaken. In 1990, test pits at the site had revealed reclamation dumps containing pottery dating from 1150-1350, as well as leather, bone and metal. Several timber revetments were recorded. Prehistoric finds had been recovered from the Thames, and evidence for the Roman foreshore had been excavated nearby. The development of properties on the site itself had been documented since the mid-13th century. It was concluded that the site was of national importance, and that an excavation should take place.
