Abstract: |
As part of an ongoing watching brief, archaeological recording was undertaken following the discovery of an area of burnt material adjacent to a palaeochannel during soil-stripping operations in advance of mineral extraction. The burnt material comprised fire-cracked and broken pebbles in a black sandy matrix which appeared to be sealed by overlying alluvium. Further investigation including the excavation of trial pits, and an auger survey demonstrated that the burnt material had formed a mound on the edge of the palaeochannel prior to its infilling. Pollen samples from the palaeochannel suggested that the channel had begun to infill in the early Flandrian. [AIP] |
