Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was undertaken of structures revealed during renovation works at Knowle Hill. The first building at the site was thought to have been constructed towards the end of the 17th century; a landscaped garden was probably begun at roughly the same time. The original house was demolished in c. 1767, and part of it was rebuilt as a folly. The survey recorded a number of minor garden structures, including a conduit house and the remains of a cross valley wall butting onto the stone revetment of the main terrace. More substantial structures at the base of the terraces to the north-east of the present house were thought to have been part of the original house, and seemed to confirm 19th century descriptions. The evidence revealed seemed to suggest that these buildings may have survived the 1767 demolition, or may have been only partly demolished. [AIP] |
