Abstract:
Observation with limited excavated was carried out during groundworks for access roads and services for a residential development. Archaeological features relating to two main periods were exposed: a series of Iron Age ditches and pits were recorded, whilst medieval and post-medieval activity was represented by probable yard surfaces, demolition and burning horizons, as well as rubble-filled pits and ditches and a brick-lined well. The rubble debris was confined to the area close to the existing 17th century manor house, so may in part relate to the demolition of the medieval manor house and any associated buildings. Potentially of most significance was the discovery, in two separate locations, of a broad, flat-bottomed, rubble-filled ditch. Although quite different in character to the larger, silt-filled probable moat-ditch located in an earlier evaluation, the likely course of this feature suggested that it too, like the moat-ditch, might once have formed a boundary around the outside of the 17th century manor house, or its predecessor, perhaps even joining up with the moat-ditch itself.
