Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that its western boundary was formed by Sweep's Ditch, a small tributary of the River Thames. Alluvial clays associated with the Ditch had been identified at the site. Neolithic occupation had been recorded 800m to the south west, and isolated Bronze Age artefacts had been found in the surrounding area. Undated cropmarks representing possible prehistoric enclosure ditches lay nearby, and a Saxon/Viking sword had been found 400m to the south east. Medieval settlement had focused around the present-day village of Laleham. It was concluded that the site may have formed a focus for human activity from the Mesolithic to the medieval period, due to its position at the confluence of Sweep's Ditch and the River Thames. No activity which could have had an impact on buried archaeological remains was known to have occurred at the site. An evaluation was recommended. [AIP] |
