Abstract: |
The archaeological assessment comprised a rapid identification survey of Cheetham Close and an intensive survey of the principal sites: a stone circle and a ring cairn. Although no new prehistoric sites were identified, extensive post-medieval mining remains were identified around the south-western slopes, including 7 mines linked by a series of embanked tramways. The intensive survey established that the stone circle had been subject to considerable disturbance since its first recording, in 1850. The ring cairn was low lying, with a probable cairn within the centre. Both the stone circle and ring cairn were types of funerary monument. The former was believed to be a later variant of the Neolithic open circle and topologically dated to early to mid Bronze Age. The ring cairn was similarly datable to the early/mid-Bronze Age. Open stone circles were often located with an emphasis on access rather than prominence and this was indeed the case for this circle. Ring cairns were usually found scattered over upland areas, but rarely on hill summits, in this respect the Cheetham Close ring cairn was uncharacteristic. [Au(abr)] |
