Abstract: |
Sutton Scarsdale Hall, a ruin in the care of English Heritage, was the subject of a full archaeological and documentary survey. The building was separated from its former deer park, walled garden and estate buildings. Although it was a ruin, without roof or floor levels, the Hall's Classical-style exterior was still intact and dated from the re-modelling of an earlier building by Francis Smith of Warwick in 1724-28. The origins of the house were traced back to a reference to the Hall in 1570. The survey traced the development of the building from this date through to its subsequent abandonement in 1920. [AIP] |
