Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken in order to identify the archaeological impact of a river diversionary scheme associated with the clay extraction industry. The diversion site lay close to an area which was identified as being rich in prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval remains. Finds and sites close to the site included the Kingsteignton anthropomorphic wooden figurine, dated to the Iron Age; a bronze spear-head and a dug-out canoe all dated to the later prehistoric periods. No archaeological or historical features considered to require preservation were identified, although examples existed within the vicinity of the assessment area. A mill site possessed the potential for post-medieval and even medieval remains which it was concluded would be the subject of further investigations. The potential for important palaeoenvironmental deposits sealed within the deep alluvium and sollifluction deposits of the area was also noted. [AIP] |
