Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken, consisting of three trenches. Trench 1 was located in order to test the possible survival of a Saxon dyke, but proved archaeologically sterile. Trenches 2 and 3 were located in order to test for evidence of the putative medieval farmstead of West Shutterton. A post-medieval pit or ditch terminus was identified in Trench 2 whilst a modern wall and surfacing were identified within Trench 3. The evaluation indicated that post-medieval and modern activity truncated any earlier deposits within the site. The absence of medieval artefacts suggested it was unlikely that there was significant activity in the area. It was possible that the line of the Saxon Old Dyke was adopted for the Exeter road which lay entirely outside the site. [Au(abr)] |
