Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment of the site was undertaken prior to the determination of planning permission for the refurbishment and partial rebuilding of the present Grade II Listed Building. The report identified the site as having considerable potential for the survival of deposits and features of several periods, particularly those relating to the 7th to 9th century settlement of Lundenwic. The report concluded that, whilst earlier construction had removed some of the archaeological deposits from the site, there was nevertheless considerable potential for the survival of significant archaeological remains, particularly in the area of the proposed basement extension. It was therefore felt likely that a further assessment, probably an archaeological evaluation, would be requested by the Planning Authority. [Au(adp)] |
