Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a motorway service area was undertaken as part of an Environmental Statement in 1995, and an updated report was produced in 1998. A cropmark representing a possible Roman ditched trackway had been identified in a field close to the proposal area; the alignment of this feature suggested that it may have extended onto the site itself. In the surrounding area, one findspot of Roman artefacts, a cropmark of a ring ditch and possible enclosure, a possible Roman road, two medieval manors and the site of an 11th century water mill had been recorded. A number of sites relating to the Second World War, including pill-boxes and anti-tank blocks, also lay in the vicinity, although most of these structures had been destroyed. It was likely that alluvial deposits from the River Roding, which lay c. 600m to the north, could have overlain archaeological deposits in the area. It was concluded that there would be a possibility of encountering Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, and that the site had a high potential for Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon remains. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out. [AIP]
