Abstract:
This report represented an interim statement on the archaeological potential of the former factory site. At the time of writing four trial trenches were being excavated on the site, and this report detailed the results to date, recording the depths of overburden, areas of deep ground disturbance and the depths of archaeological horizons encountered on the site. The site potentially contained important archaeological remains dating from the medieval and early post-medieval periods, commonly sealed by a relatively substantial overburden. Deep intrusions dating from the former industrial use of the site were present in the centre of the site. These included a brick-vaulted structure that was probably an air raid shelter, deep reinforced concrete machine bases and cellaring. Trench 1 revealed archaeological features of late medieval date at 2.82m aOD - 1m below the existing ground surface. Trench 2 revealed archaeological features of medieval date at 1.73m aOD - 1.6m below the existing ground surface. Trench 3 revealed archaeological features of medieval date at 1.33m aOD - 1.9m below the existing ground surface. Trench 4 revealed a layer containing medieval finds below cellaring at 0.85m aOD - 2m below existing the existing ground surface. [Au(adp)]
