Abstract:
The excavation of land beneath demolished 19th century shops fronting High Road, Whetstone, uncovered mainly post-medieval deposits and structures. The entire site was under a layer of modern demolition debris. A single large ditch and a buried soil were the earliest (medieval) features, although medieval material did appear residually in later features. Even then, it was possible that the ditch was not finally backfilled until the 18th century. Structural elements included wall footings, several wells and soakaways. Very fragmentary remains may have belonged to the 17th and 18th centuries, but the majority of the structural elements were 19th century and later. The west of the site had been quarried and backfilled in the 19th century and much of the eastern end was destroyed by the cellars of the buildings. What had survived seemed to relate mainly to minor outbuildings and garden features in the rear of the street-frontage buildings. The finds assemblages were small and nearly all redeposited if not modern. Only one stratified group of 19th century pottery merited further attention. [Au(abr)]
