Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken on the site of Lathom Park. Lathom House, an 18th century Palladian mansion of c.1724, had been partly demolished leaving the, now derelict, West Wing. Although no evidence revealed pre-Norman Conquest activity within the site, excavations to the north had revealed remains from the late prehistoric to medieval periods. Possible undisturbed peat raised the possibility of palaeo-ecological evidence for early vegetation clearance and arable activity. Three sites were identified as being medieval: the earthwork at pa Roughs, Lathom Chapel & Almshouses and the West Wing site. No visible evidence for Civil War siege works survived, but three successive banks and ditches had apparently surrounded the house. It was also recorded that miners had cut a trench in order to drain the moat. No evidence survived for any of these siege works, nor for the defensive outworks created around the house prior to the second siege. Any surviving features related to the siege were probably eradicated due to later activity. Good records existed for the Leoni building and Yates' map, c.1780, provided reasonably accurate cartographic representation. [Au(adp)]
