Abstract:
Archaeological recording was carried out during refurbishment works at the Abbey Halls, a group of buildings situated on the north side of Tewkesbury Abbey. Documentary research led to the discovery of early deeds associated with the early 19th century National School. This building was constructed using stones from a gaol, formerly a 16th century bell tower, which was demolished to make way for the school. To the rear of the school lay the Russell Almshouses, founded in the late 17th century and replaced in 1831-2. Watching briefs were carried out during excavations associated with the refurbishment. In the basement of the school, a number of bones which seemed to represent a child burial were found. These appeared to have been disturbed during construction of the school. Elsewhere at the site, drains and pits associated with latrines were observed and masonry which may have been associated with the original almshouses was found. During refurbishment of the National School building, many details were revealed which provided information concerning its original design and appearance. 20th century alterations were also recorded. Two further buildings, the Mission Room and the Link Block, were also examined. [AIP]
