Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken of land at St. Peter's Convent. This study included the convent grounds as well as fields to the east and north. The study area lay just to the north east of the medieval town of Plympton and its castle. Immediately north of Plmypton House were cropmarks of unknown date but there were no artefacts or features of medieval or earlier date recorded from within the study area. However, documentary evidence showed that buildings existed within the study area prior to the building of Plympton House. To the north of the study area was the Maudlyn Hospital, first documented in 1307, later the Parish Poorhouse and now demolished. This leper hospital owned two parcels of land, one adjacent to a barn situated along the northern edge of the study area fronting Ridgeway. These were purchased by George Treby in 1724 and incorporated into the grounds of Plympton House. It was also recorded that some houses were demolished prior to the construction of Plympton House. Plympton House itself was a Grade I Listed Building and was constructed towards the beginning of the 18th century and finished around 1715-1720. The boundary wall along Longcause was listed as Grade II. The gardens were also listed as Grade II and were included on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England, Part 11 Devon. To the south west of the house were walled gardens, one of which incorporated a prospect mound, possibly covering an icehouse. To the rear of the house a possible tree-lined avenue leading towards Ridgeway was shown on a 1784 map of the study area. This possible avenue was separated by a still extant bank from a further range of garden plots also shown on the same map. [Au(abr)]
