Abstract:
The archaeological desktop assessment indicated that much of the proposed development area was occupied by a former course of the River Hipper, which was canalised and diverted to the south in the late 19th and early 20th century. There were no records of Roman or earlier activity in the area, and in the medieval to early post-medieval period the area to the north of the river comprised the southernmost ends of crofts which would have had their main buildings fronting streets to the north. The only former major building of 17th or earlier date, but only partially within the development area, was the House of Correction or Prison. Further building on the area did not occur until the mid-18th century with construction of the Silk Mill, but the main phase of the development was the appearance of some small houses in the 19th century.
