Abstract:
The watching brief was undertaken during the topsoil stripping of the roadway. A prehistoric flint scraper and a notched flint implement were recovered and five other struck or worked flints were provisionally identified, distributed along the entire length of the corridor to the north of the minor road between Colyton Cross and Suttons Cross. One sherd of medieval coarse chert-tempered pottery, dated between 1000-1400 AD was found, as well as one piece of iron slag of unknown date. The stretch of roadway south from the minor road through Field 3 to join the access road to Sutton Barton Landfill Site revealed a total of 12 struck or worked lithics of presumed prehistoric date. Two separate parallel ditches, an earlier, narrower, more V-shaped one which was cut by a broader, flatter-bottomed one. The ditches appeared to be associated with an adjacent low bank to the northeast, which extended across the field. [Au(adp)]
