Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out due to proposed redevelopment. It was thought that untruncated natural deposits on the site may have lain between c12.5m OD and c.13m OD. Horizontal archaeological deposits spanning the prehistoric to post-medieval periods were likely to have survived to within 1m of the current ground level across some parts of the site - currently public open spaces and roads. Although some horizontal stratigraphy may have survived beneath the basement, it was likely to have been very disturbed and fragmented by the piling scheme associated with the existing building. The report concluded that any proposed deep basement would involve the removal of archaeological remains of all periods, which survived beneath the modern public open space adjacent to 5 Cheapside, and the carriageway of Paternoster Row. It was further concluded that field evaluation of the site was necessary to substantiate the extent and levels of archaeological survival. [Au(abr)] |
