Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during construction work at the former site of an 18th-19th century cottage. A previous evaluation had recorded medieval pottery, and 17th-18th century material associated with the cottage. This suggested that the cottage may have lain on the site of an earlier building, or may have been of earlier date than was thought. During the watching brief, a probable pit containing two sherds of 12th-13th century pottery, remains relating to the cottage, an 18th century potsherd and a fragment of clay pipe were found. It was concluded that the cottage had not been built upon earlier foundations, but may have been constructed a few decades earlier than previously surmised. [AIP] |
