Abstract: |
A watching brief on demolition works observed that the removal of concrete standings and tarmac paths had a minimal impact on underlying archaeological layers. Soil dumping in the 19th and 20th centuries seemed to have covered traces of earlier gardens, protecting them. It was not discovered how much disturbance to the archaeology of the underlying formal gardens had occurred before this dumping was carried out. Excavations associated with the works did not appear to penetrate to depths sufficient to comment on this. [Au(abr)] |
