Abstract:
A proposal had been put forward for the redevelopment of part of the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond. This would involve the demolition of the 1963 extension to this grade I Listed Building and its replacement with a more sensitively designed structure. The site lay immediately outside the town walls next to a postern gate that provided access to and from the priory. Such a location would be likely to attract extramural settlement during medieval and post-medieval times. Archaeological excavations in the near vicinity had proved such occupation. Accurate maps first became available in 1773. Except for the theatre itself, there had been little building activity on the site since then. Truncation of archaeological deposits by recent development was therefore unlikely. It was recommended that the new extension should be designed so that its foundations do not intrude any deeper into the ground than the existing one. In this case, no further archaeological work would be necessary on the site. If this was not possible, archaeological evaluation was recommended to assess the depth and nature of archaeological deposits. The Georgian Theatre Royal was a grade I Listed Building and was surrounded by other Listed structures. The new extension should be designed to fit in sympathetically with its surroundings. [Au(abr)]
