Abstract: |
The site of the development lay within the limits of the medieval settlement of Long Compton. To the NW of the site, c.180m away, is the medieval Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, as well as earthworks, a moat and fishponds associated with the site of the medieval manor house. Twelve foundation trenches were monitored. The trenches varied slightly in size but were on average 1m wide and up to 0.9m deep. A N-S aligned drain, built of three courses of rough limestone blocks with a similar capping, was seen in trenches 3, 4 and 5. Three pits were seen in Trenches 8 and 9; these pits produced few finds but included modern material. A tree-throw pit was seen in Trench 10 and a large, shallow unidentified cut was observed in Trench 1. No significant archaeological features were seen. The pits were probably modern and the tree-throw pit was not dated as there were no finds. The barn present on the site had shallow foundations. The drain and pits probably related to the use of the barn and surrounding area for agricultural purposes.[AIP] |
