Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was conducted in advance of a proposed development. The proposed development area was occupied throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods. Archaeological remains relating to this activity had the potential to have survived below ground over most of the area, and may have existed close to the present ground surface. These remains were likely to have consisted of flood deposits, one or more phases of river retaining wall, rubbish deposits reflecting domestic and industrial activity, wooden and stone buildings, and yards, vennels and tenement boundaries. Deposits would have been removed in some areas, by the construction of the cellar, the petrol/diesel tanks, and by service trenches. It was recommended that the logs relating to boreholes due to be taken on site be examined by an archaeologist, in order to give a clear indication of the nature and extent of archaeological deposits present within specific areas. It was recommended that the present workshop/car wash building be recorded (RCHME Level 2) following demolition of the garage to the north, and the removal of the present rendering. It was not anticipated that the development would result in major areas of ground reduction where archaeological deposits had the potential to survive, and an archaeological watching brief was recommended during ground reduction works.
