Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on alterations to an early 17th century three-storey timber-framed building. The works involved the removal and replacement of most of the external walling of the ground storey of the building and repairs to some of the ground floor and second floor wall-posts. In addition, some re-flooring was carried out in the adjacent timber framed building at 84 Goodramgate. The only potentially medieval deposits observed were a limestone wall, and a deposit of silty clay which had built up against this wall. No dating evidence was recovered from either the wall or the deposit so their precise date was unclear. They were interpreted as possibly medieval because no post-medieval brick was present. The majority of the features observed dated to the post-medieval period. The present structure at 78 Low Petergate originally consisted of an early 17th century three-bay timber-framed building, later shortened to two bays. The surviving wall-posts rested on post-pads, and earlier stone/brick walling. An interrupted sill beam had also partially survived. A number of post-medieval deposits which had accumulated against the building were also observed. 78 Low Petergate was shortened by one bay in the late 18th century; the newly created Goodramgate elevation was refaced in brick and the brickwork used was typical of the period. The insertion of a shop frontage into the 17th century timber-framed building was of uncertain date. It must have post-dated 1771, but could have been either late post-medieval or modern in date. The shop-frontage consisted of four new wall-posts resting upon post-pads, a door running diagonally across the southern corner of the building, three window sills and external cladding for the ground-floor post-medieval wall-posts. A number of deposits that had accumulated against this structure and related to the present paving and present internal floors of the building were also observed. All of these were of modern date. Within 78 Low Petergate wall cladding of 20th century date was observed. In addition 20th century repairs consisting of render and injected foam were visible at second storey level. [Au(adp)] |
