Abstract:
A survey was carried out within a plot of land, 70% of which could potentially be used for secondary plant and material storage in connection with works to reinforce Ladybower Dam. A complex of earthworks within the plot was believed to have occupied the site of a temporary settlement and/or workplace established in the 1930s for people engaged upon the original construction of the dam and related structures. It had been suggested that the earthworks incorporated part of an earlier pattern of field boundaries. The majority of the earthworks recorded by the survey reflected activities intended to create levelled emplacements for buildings and structures. The terracing nearest the eastern boundary appeared sufficiently extensive to be regarded as a trackway. One distinct and well-defined feature was a platform, 35-40m in length and 6-7m in width. Other platforms were less extensive. Two slight banks and a possible short stub of a third were identified. These appeared to have been transgressed by other earthworks, making it appear likely that they had represented relatively early features in a palimpsest of earthworks. Itwas noted that prehistoric flints were alleged to have been found in the vicinity. Maps of 1898 and 1921 showed no structures at the site, whilst a photograph of 1945 showed a greater density of buildings than a map prepared in 1948. It was concluded that the earthworks had probably been created, at least in part, as a 'navvy camp' of the 1930s-1940s, but that they may well have incorporated earlier elements. It was noted that only an excavation could provide further information regarding the character and sequence of the earthworks. [AIP]
