Abstract: |
It was certain that foundations of buildings and former slipways etc. would survive beneath the present wharf surfaces, as evidenced by the observation of a test pit on Commercial Wharf in 1994. Although the majority of anticipated archaeological deposits and features will date from the 17th'“19th centuries, traces of the earlier phases of building may also have survived. In addition, original foreshore deposits (lower harbour silts) may have been encountered (as elsewhere around Sutton Harbour). The extent of disturbance across the study area caused by cellars or service trenches, tanks and tunnels was not known. [Au(adp)] |
