Abstract: |
Excavation in advance of redevelopment of the former White Swan public house revealed traces of Neolithic settlement and burial located on a sand and gravel bar beneath alluvium. A single grave cut into the natural sand contained a poorly preserved crouched inhumation, possibly a woman. The burial was accompanied by a fragment of a carbonated bowl, a flint knife and other struck flints. A radiocarbon date obtained from an oak retaining plank within the grave was calibrated to 3220-3979 BC. This burial was the earliest known from London. A nearby hearth contained 9 fragments of Early Bronze Age pottery. [Au(abr)] |
