Abstract: |
An archaeolgical evaluation, consisting of the excavation of a single 2m by 27m trench, was undertaken in response to a condition on planning permission for the erection of a health club, swimming pool and associated services. No deposits or features of archaeological importance were found. The natural clay in the river valley was overlain by thin gravel, that merged into the degraded remains of a natural soil profile. A field drain and rubbish pit were cut into this soil, and the area was stained and slightly contaminated, perhaps by works associated with a nearby sewage farm. The site was then partially truncated and levelled for the construction of the latest tennis courts. No dating or environmental information was recovered. [Au(adp)] |
