Abstract: |
The archaeological desk-based assessment considered the archaeological potential of the site and the likely impact on this by the proposed redevelopment. This assessment showed that the site lay in an area of interest. There was a high potential for the Roman road from Silchester to Colchester to cross on or close to the study site and there may be features of interest such as roadside ditches associated with this. There was a possibility for the remains of 17th and 18th century houses and Bull Yard to have survived complete truncation on the site. The proposed foundations and basements for the new building extensions would totally remove all archaeological deposits down to below the natural ground surface. In the area of the current buildings it was probable that most, if not all, archaeological deposits had already been removed. It was likely therefore that the areas of highest archaeological potential were those outside the existing buildings in the current car park areas. [Au(abr)] |
