Abstract:
Two areas of re-laid medieval tiles at the site of Wenlock Priory were recorded. Areas 1a and 1b consisted of 1,985 tiles laid in two adjacent areas in the south aisle of the nave. At least half of Area 1b was composed of very small fragments which, even when well-preserved, were too small to be related to known tile designs. Many of the larger tiles in this area were well-preserved, and a number of recurring designs were identified. Some larger Victorian tiles were included, which may have been fairly modern at the time when the tiles had been re-laid, approximately 100 years previously. Area 2 encompassed all of the interior floor space of the Scriptorium, consisting of a narrow rectangular area. This floor had apparently been re-laid at the same time as that within Area 1, and comprised a total of 1,758 tiles, some of which had been concealed by stone coffins. The condition of the tiles was much worse in Area 2 than in Area 1, although it was nonetheless possible to trace the majority of the tiles. [AIP]
