Abstract: |
The assessment was designed as an addendum to the full desk-based assessment for the whole Flood Defence Scheme carried out in 1999. The revised route lay within a landscape of archaeological interest due to its long history of reclamation and exploitation. A number of earthworks relating to these historic episodes lay in the vicinity of the route and possible faint traces of ridge and furrow earthworks lay within the corridor itself. The assessment also identified a number of natural and modern small-scale structural features within the revised route, considered to be of low archaeological significance. The observation of selected geotechnical bore holes within the revised route found no evidence of buried prehistoric or Roman ground surfaces which had been proved beneath alluvial deposits at other sites on the Severn Estuary.
