Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a site undergoing redevelopment was carried out. A Palaeolithic handaxe had been found nearby, and a site with evidence of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age occupation had been recorded. Roman features and artefacts and a small number of medieval sites and findspots had also been found, whilst the projected route of a Roman road may have crossed the site. A house and grounds, with an ornamental lake, had occupied the site from the late 18th century onwards. It was concluded that any buried archaeological remains at the site were likely to have been disturbed or destroyed by subsequent development, although this did not entirely preclude their survival.
