Abstract: |
An outbreak of dry rot led to the lifting of the floors in both of the toilets immediately north of the Chapel, and flagstones within an intervening stair passage at Jesus College. Complex archaeology, of four phases was revealed, surpassing expectations of what would be present. The phases were as follows; I) the establishment in the 12th century of a Nunnery and the construction of a Chapel, (possibly with an ancillary timber structure to the north); II) the insertion of a door in the north Chapel Transept at below-plinth level and the construction of a Chapterhouse/Vestry at a reduced level, (probably two phases of building in the later 12th and 13th centuries); III) the conversion of the Nunnery into a College c.1500; and IV) alteration of the College fabric in the 19th and 20th centuries.
