Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken during the laying of a new water main. The area around the route contained many earthworks, with a trapezoidal ditched enclosure to the southwest of the easement and an area of mounds, hollows and building platforms on the outskirts of Farnsfield, immediately west of the north end of the route. The field boundary to the west of the route marked the boundary between the parishes of Farnsfield and Edingley. During the watching brief, further low earthworks were identified on OS parcel 1900, one of which crossed the easement at the western extent of the field. The earthworks consisted of a series of parallel, widely-spaced low banks and ditches. When the topsoil was removed in the easement, the ditches were not visible in the subsoil, showing that they were physically superficial. No artefacts were associated, and the features were undated. Their regularity perhaps indicated a recent origin. A weathered parish boundary stone with no obvious markings on it was located about halfway along the route. The stone lay to the south west of the easement adjoining an old right of way. The date of this stone was unknown. No archaeological features or artefacts were observed during the topsoil strip within the easement and the compound area. This suggested that the earthworks noted at VES535, presumably related to the village of Farnsfield, did not extend to the east side of Cotton Mill Lane; the lane may thus have formed a boundary of some antiquity.
