Abstract: |
The assessment identified the possibility that significant well-preserved archaeological deposits were present within the area of the proposed development and that groundworks would risk damaging any surviving remains. The high archaeological potential of the site could be demonstrated with reference to three specific sites in the vicinity. Firstly, large-scale excavations carried outs c.150 metres to the south-east recorded evidence for the significant occupation of peripheral areas of the Roman town in the mid to late fourth century. The location of this site in a similarly peripheral area suggested that similar structures might have survived there. Secondly, an evaluation and watching brief to the immediate south of the site had recorded second and fourth century Romano-British deposits. Thirdly, an evaluation 30 metres to the south-west of the study area recorded Romano-British deposits. [Au(adp)] |
